Incense is a natural resin which is harvested from the bark of the incense tree.
When glowing hot it develops an aromatic aroma which has been used as a type of medicine and as a delightful essence for religious rituals.
In antiquity, incense was mainly used in the Mediterranean as a disinfectant and refreshing essence for Church services and other religious gatherings. Having said this, only affluent citizens could afford it as incense was a precious commodity at that time.
At Church services incense was and is used to sanctify and purify the alter or the faithful.
The rising smoke is a symbol of veneration and the prayers rising up to God.
Pure incense is rarely lit. Incense mixtures are typically made up of incense, smoking resins, essential oils, blossoms and woods which each respectively develop their own notes.
The incense mixtures from Butzon & Bercker are among the group of “Church incenses”. These classic mixtures are traditionally used in Church services and therefore bare names with biblical and religious reference.
A number of characterised are attributed to the incense which come to bare in the different mixtures: Invigorating, refreshing, soothing.
Because of its anti-inflammatory effects, incense is often used in specific parts of medicine.
The positive characteristics of incense are reinforced today and have been rediscovered in meditation and prayer.
