Scallop shells such as these were carried and worn by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, the final resting place of St. James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. They were thereby under special protection and had the blessing of the Church, at the same time they were used as drinking vessels.

This symbol is supposed to remind us that God’s protective blessing accompanies me on my long journey through life.

It’s supposed to encourage us not to lose sight of our goals: God, the creator and the purpose of my life, he won’t let me thirst.

A symbol which invites us to “take on” God’s blessing, both spiritually and palpably in our hands.
